The Changing Kemah Bridge

I shared the top image in May.  Since that time I have purchased new software and hopefully learned a few more things.  And each time that I modify an image, it looks different than previous versions.  The picture depends on my mood.  During Sunday, I would modify the original picture to produce the bottom image.  Look at the two images and decide which one you think is better.

I cropped the image a little tighter to remove some distractions near the edges.  The support braces under the bridge near the middle of the pictures are brighter.  I softened the blown-out lights.  I removed the yellow sign near the top center.  I lighten the reflections on the clouds of the town lights seen in the upper right.  I passed the file through a noise reduction program to smooth the concrete posts and noise in the blue sky.  I played with the file so much that I may have forgotten something?

Bryce Sunset Two

Bryce Canyon Sunset

The first image was presented last month.  It started life as the -1.33 bracket shot of the three files that I combined to produce the HDR image below it.  I still like the first image.

I find that something seems to be missing in the HDR version. I am not sure what is missing. This image has a few clouds in the sky. You can see the shadow line of the surrounding hills. The blue of the sky looks about normal. You can even see the dust storm. There are people in the shot. Maybe it is a balance problem? The eye is pulled to the bright hill and sky. I included the tree on the left to balance the green in the middle and the rock in the lower right. The combination makes a diagonal.

I will keep searching. I have to go find some more pictures. I am getting tired of Utah.

Seventh Birthday

Seventh Birthday

I have been working on old pictures that were originally slides. Of course, over the years the slides have collected a huge amount of dust and the colors have faded. I removed some of the dust with a blast of air and then scanned the image.

This picture of my son on his 7th birthday was originally in color; but, the bright pattern on the sofa behind him was distracting. Yes, the picture was taken over 30 years ago and my photographic skills were lacking. But I like the expression on his face. Is he making a wish? A B&W version retains the expression while muting the distracting colors.
